So the US's run is over with a 2-1 loss to Ghana. They played decently and had some good chances in the second half, so it wasn't horrible. The sad part is that Italy beat the Czech's, so if the US had won they would have advanced. Now Ghana gets the opportunity to play Brazil :-)

Also, since I have sound working on my computer again, I've been playing a lot more Civilization IV. Goood stuff. I love this game! The English empire will rule the world soon enough...

djedi and I are gone this weekend apartment hunting. Exciting!

I confess that I was actually rooting hardcore for Ghana. Part of me feels like since the U.S. doesn't really care about soccer, there is something ugly about our winning that too.

I would have a slight tendency to agree with you, except, I dunno, I was excited about our team. Plus there were at least an Alamo Drafthouse theater-full of Austinites rooting for the US :-)

Besides, we didn't win the World Baseball Classic or the basketball competition at the last Olympics, so it's not like we're running over other countries or anything. Parity at last...

We were obviously rooting for both Ghana and USA, but I know krikwennavd was a little disappointed by Ghana winning due to a ref'ing mistake. It is rather odd to see Ghana as such a household name/word _without_ having a disaster strike it (which is what it usually takes to hear about a country like that...) krikwennavd was having a little fun watching for the regional differences in the various players based on bone structure as well as realizing that one of the USA players had _very_ West African features... (which went along with his name, as it turned out).

Well, he can perhaps take solace in the fact that if you take away the goal from the ref'ing mistake, you're left with a tie, which still makes Ghana advance and USA not (not taking into account morale/momentum/etc. that could've been different then). But I was more disappointed with the ref'ing problems in the Italy game than with this one, for that reason.

We discussed that, but he felt the morale/momentum/etc stuff was decently significant. Unfortunately, ref'ing mistakes like this are part of the game.
