Well, first dems actually are being looked to here in Texas...you know when the last time was that we were courted in any way???

Second, I read that something like 10% of Republicans were voting in the Dem side (against Hillary) rather than vote for McCain since he's gonna win anyways.

Possibly a stupid question: Can I vote in the primary without being labelled a Democrat officially? I am independent, and I like being independent, and I want neither the Dems or the Reps to be able to count me as "theirs."

According to something I read quite recently (but I think I threw away and in any case can't find it), when you vote in the Texas primary, that labels you as a Democrat or Republican for 2 years, and prevents you from voting in the opposite party's primaries for 2 years (are there other primaries?). I don't know what other ramifications it may have (the primary prevention was the only thing listed), but it resets after those 2 years supposedly.

I did some research (check out this fun Texas election law page!) - it looks like the relevant chapter is 162 "Regulating Participation in Party Affairs". The gist of it is that voting in a party primary "affiliates" you with that party, and you can't vote in the other party's primary during that voting year (which is how long the affiliation lasts).

So, it does mean something, but it's not particularly important or easy to determine. (when we early voted our voter IDs weren't stamped or anything)
